What Are You Really Hoping to Gain?

The ticket was never the point.
The ticket was never the point.

I joked recently that all I needed to do was win the lottery.

It was funny.

At least, that's what I thought.

Then I paused and asked myself a different question.

What am I really hoping to gain?

The answer surprised me.

It wasn't money.

Not really.

Money was simply the vehicle.

What I was actually hoping for was freedom.

Freedom from carrying everything alone.

Freedom to build the life I imagine.

Freedom to create without constant financial pressure.

Freedom to breathe.

The more I sat with that thought, the more I realized how often we mistake the destination for the desire.

We say we want the promotion.

The bigger house.

The relationship.

The degree.

The business.

The lottery ticket.

But if we're willing to ask one more question—Why?—we often discover something much deeper waiting underneath.

Maybe what we're really hoping to gain is security.

Or peace.

Or belonging.

Or rest.

Or the freedom to become the person we've quietly been trying to find.

That realization changed something for me.

It reminded me that while circumstances certainly matter, they are not always the true source of what we're seeking.

Sometimes we're chasing a solution when what we're really long for is a feeling.

For a long time, I believed freedom would arrive when everything around me changed.

Now I'm beginning to wonder if freedom sometimes begins much earlier than that.

Maybe it begins the moment we become honest with ourselves.

The moment we stop pretending.

The moment we stop carrying what was never ours to carry.

The moment we stop abandoning ourselves in order to preserve something that no longer brings life.

That kind of freedom doesn't erase grief.

It doesn't make difficult decisions painless.

It doesn't magically remove uncertainty.

But it does return something priceless.

Your voice.

And once you find your own voice again, life has a funny way of opening doors you couldn't even see before.

So today, I have one question for you.

When you think about the thing you want most…

What are you really hoping to gain?

You might discover that what you're searching for has never been about the thing itself.

It has been about what you believe that thing will finally make possible.

Perhaps the first step toward freedom isn't receiving everything you've been asking for.

Perhaps it's understanding what your heart has been asking for all along.

Welcome to the Journey.
